Beklenmeyen Dokunuş’ta Sevda Bad, Batı sanat tarihi üzerine aldığı eğitimden ve bireysel araştırmalarından yararlanarak Minimalizm çizgisine yakın ancak ona sıkı sıkıya bağlı kalmamayı hedefleyen bir dizi iş sergiliyor.

Azaltma, sadelik, düzen ve armoni peşinden giden 20. yüzyılın bu önemli sanat akımını geliştiren ve izleyen sanatçılar, rafine bir sanatı ve gerçeği yeni bir düzlemde aradılar. Resim, tasarım, tiyatro ve mimari gibi pek çok alanda deneyimlenen minimalist yaklaşım, malzeme çeşidinden renk kullanımına kadar her unsurda mümkün olan en dar aralığı tercih etti. Son derece sade ve saf şekiller ve formlarla kendi gerçeğini yarattı.

Beklenmeyen Dokunuş’ta Sevda Bad, tekrara dayanan geometrik şekilleri, minimal renk kullanımını, formlar arası geçişte keskin hatları yeğledi. Odağını, estetik değerlere, kurguladığı biçimlere ve dokulara verdi. Bunu yaparken minimalist gelenekte olduğu gibi bir soyutlamaya giderek duygusal ifadeleri resmin dışında bıraktı.

Çıkış noktasını buradan almakla beraber Sevda Bad minimalizmde öncelenmeyen hatta tercih dışı bırakılan bir eksene yöneldi. Kumaş üzerine elle işlediği iplik, boncuk ve benzer nesnelerle el işçiliğini ve sanatçı dokunuşunu üretiminin merkezine taşıdı. El becerisi ve ustalık isteyen üretim modelinden uzak duran ve bunu yeri geldiğinde endüstriyel işleyiş ve seri üretimle değiştiren minimalizmin aksine Beklenmeyen Dokunuş, sanatçının elinin işlevini her an görebildiğimiz bir dizi işten oluştu. Bu yüzden minimalist rotadan gönüllü olarak şaşmayı ve şaşırtmayı tercih etti.

Bu hamleye bir anlamda Bauhaus’un sanatla zanaatı birleştiren yaklaşımına yakınlık olarak bakabiliriz ancak Bad’ın belki ilk başta kendisinin bile fark etmediği özgünlüğü, Bauhaus’un işlevselliğe verdiği önemden uzak durması oldu. Bad bunun yerine Beklenmeyen Dokunuş’ta malzeme tercihleri ve el işçiliğinin katkısıyla bu toprakların kültürel dokusundan, folklorundan ve el emeğinden beslenen bir seri ortaya çıkarttı.

Unexpected Touch

Based on her education on the Western Art History and individual research, Sevda Bad presents in her exhibition “Unexpected Touch” a series of work that is close but not limited to Minimalism.

In their pursuit of reduction, simplicity, order and harmony, artists who developed and followed this significant art movement of the 20th Century sought a refined art as well as truth on in new platform. Minimalist approach which was experienced in many fields such as painting, design, theatre, and architecture among others, preferred the narrowest range possible in every element from the choice of material to colour. It created its own truth with utmost plain and pure shapes and forms.

Similarly, in “Unexpected Touch”, Sevda Bad preferred geometric shapes based on repetition, minimum use of colours, and sharp lines in transition between forms. She gave her focus to aesthetic values, the forms, and textures she constructed. While doing this, she excluded emotional expressions by leaning towards abstraction as in the minimalist tradition.

Although taking her starting point from here, Sevda Bad has turned to an axis that is not prioritized and even left out in minimalism. She brought the handcraft and the artist’s touch to the centre of her work with threads, beads, and similar objects that she handcrafted on the fabric. Unlike minimalism, which avoids the modes of production that require dexterity and mastery and replaces it with industrial operation and mass production when appropriate, “Unexpected Touch” consists of a series of works in which we can see the function of the artist's hand at any time. That's why she voluntarily chose to surprise and divert from the minimalist route.

In a sense, we can look at this move as an affinity with Bauhaus' approach that combines art and craft, but Bad's originality, perhaps not even realizing at first, was that she distanced herself from the importance that Bauhaus attached to functionality. Instead, she created a series inspired by the richness of the cultural texture, folklore, and handicraft of our geography, with her choices of material and the space she gave to hand labour in this exhibiton.
